World Renowned Space Medicine Expert Presents At The Singapore Science Festival



Human Survival Against The Odds

Ever wondered if you’ve got what it takes to survive in space? Join world-renowned space medicine expert Dr Kevin Fong as he takes Singaporeans on a journey into low earth orbit and beyond at this year’s STAR Lecture – How to Survive in Space – as part of the Singapore Science Festival in partnership with the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

A medical doctor and founder of University College London’s Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme Environment Physiology, Dr Fong has trained with the best of the best at NASA in the United States, with medical rotations at the Johnson and Kennedy Space Centres.

Drawing on Dr Fong’s interest in extreme environments, this year’s STAR Lecture will look at how science, medicine and engineering work hand-in-hand to answer our biggest questions about life, earth and the universe, and delve into the harsh effects space travel has on the human body.

Dr Fong said the aim of the lecture is to inspire children about life beyond earth, before they’ve created an impression of a world that has walls.

“It is vital to take advantage of the short period of time when kids think that anything is possible, and engage them in science earlier than we probably do.

“As long as we can suspend disbelief in this wonderful thing of exploration, then people can go on to do incredible, creative and magnificent things. We need to show children that they don’t need to be in the International Space Station to be part of the most remarkable achievements of the human race,” said Dr Fong.

Professor Alfred Huan, Executive Director of the A*STAR Graduate Academy and Executive Director of A*STAR’s Institute of High Performance Computing, and Co-Chairperson of the SSF 2016 Organising Committee said, “Dr. Fong’s lecture illustrates the nature of his multidisciplinary work, drawing on his background in diverse fields such as astronautics & space engineering and medicine, leading to innovations that can help astronauts survive in space flight.

“The ability to harness knowledge from different STEM disciplines will determine our success in bridging the gap between scientific discoveries and real-life applications, and will enable organisations like A*STAR to create the technologies that are needed for health outcomes, urban living and sustainability. We encourage the many Dr. Fongs among us to persevere in mastering STEM and to use it creatively, even as we set our sights on building a Smart Nation and tackling our health challenges,” Professor Huan said.

Associate Professor Lim Tit Meng, Chief Executive, Science Centre Singapore and Co-Chairperson of the SSF 2016 Organising Committee said that many young children grow up aspiring to be an astronaut, but only a very small percentage of them actually ever get a chance to go into space.

“We are pleased to have Dr Fong here with us to share more on space exploration and the challenges that come with it. His lecture will also help to highlight how an education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) can help push boundaries and allow us to explore the unknown.

“From hospital wards to the world’s best space centres – the beauty of a career in STEM is that the opportunities are limitless. What was once considered science fiction is fast becoming today’s science fact, and this has only been made possible through STEM,” said Associate Professor Lim.

STAR Lecture is the final highlight event of the Singapore Science Festival. Themed Build Your Smart Future, the Festival celebrates STEM as the building blocks to becoming a Smart Nation.
